Plants that do double or even triple duty!
Some plants, shrubs and trees not only enhance the landscape but go a step further and multi-task by adding additional value. For instance some flower + fruit + fabulous fall color, now that is triple duty. To meet the double duty criteria the plant must bring value to the garden and supply the gardener with something useful or frivolous to enhance their day to day life. (

Aesthetic Edibles – Mix it Up
Edible/ornamental gardening culture is a trend that many gardeners are looking to maximize small spaces. Mixing leafy vegetable in flower pots or introducing perennial herbs such as chives, sage, oregano and thyme look right at home grown in flower beds, and when planted with or near other vegetables, their nectar-rich flowers attract lots of tiny pollinators and beneficial insects that help control pests on nearby tomatoes and broccoli.
Going All Green
Add intrigue – shape, form & texture
Just because evergreen shrubs are workhorses doesn’t mean they have to be boring. There are many textures and options to choose from. Evergreen shrubs can have very small leaves, pointy pine needles or even appear soft and fluffy. Planting opposing textures next to each other accentuates the differences and makes for a more interesting landscape.
The same goes for shape and size. You can pair tall, interestingly shaped evergreens with well-behaved, mounded ones. The effect is dramatic and eye-catching.
